Abstract
This capstone explains four main components of a balanced literacy program including read aloud, shared reading, guided reading, and independent reading. Four literacy centers including an independent reading center, word center, listening center, and computer center are described in detail. When established, implemented and managed effectively, literacy centers are an excellent addition to a balanced literacy block. The benefits to implementing literacy centers include: giving children the opportunity to work in small groups, allowing them to learn from each other. Literacy centers provide opportunities for differentiation, they decrease the amount of busy work and the amount of worksheets, and they also keep children active.
