Abstract
How can I modify my 8th grade United States History curriculum to include multicultural units and better reflect the diversity of my district? The purpose of this study was to identify areas of my Contemporary United States History curricula to modify in order to address the cultural diversity of my district. The secondary purpose of this study was to evaluate if cultural competency could be taught. This study was done over the course of one semester utilizing one general and one enriched section of my 8th grade class and was approved by both Hamline University and the district Curriculum Coordinator, Director of Teaching and Learning, and Superintendent. Students completed surveys, partook in a focus group, and submitted student audio journal entries for analysis. The results reflected an increase in cultural competency and suggested student motivation, understanding, and intrigue shifts when students understand multiculturalism and the perspectives captured in history.
