Abstract

The research question addressed in this project was, how does a leader successfully promote change within his community? Reaction to change varies from one community to another. This study focused on leadership in communities that embrace change. A city manager, recognized for his success in managing community change, participated in two semi-structured interviews. The research literature described leadership characteristics observed in leaders of communities that support change and the data analysis identified these characteristics in this city manager's leadership style. The analysis described the method this leader used to manage change in his community. According to the analysis, differentiating between the work of the elected officials and that of the department heads was an integral component in the creation of this team. The analysis also showed an environment of trust allowed each person to perform without interference.
