Abstract
The research question addressed in this project was, what is the level of awareness of food allergies and their treatment among the health services staff in our large suburban school district? The motivating factor for this capstone was a personal experience with a severe food allergy combined with professional experience as a licensed school nurse with a dramatic increase in number and severity of food allergies among students and staff in the school setting. This capstone details food allergy symptoms, current treatment measures, and guidelines for caring for a student with food allergies. A 20 question survey was developed and deployed to assess the health service team's current knowledge of food allergies and their treatment. The results highlighted the areas where further education was needed. This information will be used to develop training materials for the health services staff initially with future opportunities extending to the entire school personnel.
