Abstract
The research question addressed in this project was, what academic changes are taking place in the United States, and more specifically, in Minnesota in an effort to stay competitive in a global economy? The motivating factor for this capstone was to compare the education system in the United States with countries like India and China and examine which countries are doing a better job in preparing their students for a fast changing world. A key influence for this capstone was the book The World is Flat by Thomas Friedman, which inspired a teacher to take a hard look at the United States educational system as well reflecting on the education taught in his own classroom. The teacher interviewed key members with educational instruction and philosophy in Minnesota Department of Education and in Stillwater Area Schools as well as researching educational objectives and philosophies in other countries.
