Abstract
The research question addressed in this project was how would placement in a same gender writing class affect the writing attitudes and writing performance of sixth grade male writers? The motivation to undertake this project came after hearing test scores and news reports indicating that young boys are falling behind in school. This project submerges young men into an all-boys' writing class where ten key factors are the focus: feedback, humor, choice, private failure, word processing, male role models, visuals, purpose, audience, and movement. The key influences for this project were Nancie Atwell's Writers' Workshop, Ralph Fletcher's Boy Writers: Reclaiming Their Voices (2006), and The Minds of Boys (Gurian & Stevens, 2005). The study took place over four weeks and involved boys in creating a school newspaper. The results indicate that writing performance stabilized and writing attitudes slightly improved.
