Abstract
The research topic addressed in this project resulted from my profession as a licensed school nurse working with many students who have a chronic health condition. The motivating factor for this capstone was looking at how a school nurse can work with teachers to enable them to better understand a student's needs with a chronic illness in the classroom. This research will guide and create strategies for interactions and collaboration across different disciplines of academic work to better serve children in the classroom who live with chronic illness. A teacher survey on the topic of students with chronic health conditions, teacher knowledge of chronic illnesses and teacher perceptions of this topic was implemented. The findings from the literature research and survey results demonstrate that school nurses play a beneficial role in working with teacher's to enable them to better understand the needs of students with a chronic illness.
