Abstract
The research question addressed is how can I incorporate best practice reading strategies to support struggling middle school readers in comprehending nonfiction text? The research was influenced by my previous experience with reading strategies, advice from colleagues, and staff development training. The latest research on reading strategy successfulness greatly influenced my research. The participants were eighth grade students in a suburban school district that are below grade level in their reading abilities. These students struggle with reading and have very low reading abilities and very diverse backgrounds. Many of the students are minorities and have low socioeconomic status. The research method involved using Janice Almasi's Strategy Instruction Model to teach students the Say Something, Double Entry Journal, INSERT, and Click or Clunk Strategies. I used results of comprehension questions, student surveys, teacher survey, and teacher observation to determine effectiveness.
