Abstract
This capstone examines how to implement literature circles into the classroom for the purpose of increasing higher-level thinking and questioning in students. Research is compiled on literature circles, teaching reading effectively, and asking higher-level questions and teaching students to do the same. The research also explores the benefits of using higher-level questioning in the classroom. Following the research is a detailed plan of action for implementing literature circles including the books used to instruct students in how to ask high level questions and strategic lessons geared toward the development of high-level questioning in students. The results of the implementation in a fifth grade classroom are presented through observation and survey data.
