Abstract
The research question addressed in this study was, what impact will a six-week seminar focusing on waste reduction, recycling and reducing consumption have on the attitudes and behaviors of rural, at-risk high school students? The motivation for this capstone was increasing student's environmental awareness. In the seminar students were presented with activities and field trips that deepened their understanding of reduce, reuse, recycle. They spent time outside observing nature and journaling about what they observed and the field trips. Attitude and behavior changes were measured by the administration and of pre-seminar and post-seminar survey. The author documents that the seminar had an overall positive effect. Positive gains in environmental knowledge were reported. Smaller positive gains in attitudes were reported.
