Course Description
Violence is commonplace in our society. There are a number of factors that contribute to this and many theories to explain it. Students will study several high profile local and national homicide cases that will provide insight into how such crimes are resolved and the stakeholders involved. Students will begin by learning about the initial response to a homicide including crime scene investigation, collection and analysis of forensic evidence, and criminal investigation by law enforcement agencies. As the investigation proceeds, the role of attorneys, judges, and jurors will be examined. Topics to be discussed include theories of violence, victimology, role of the media, admissibility of forensic and other evidence, trial procedures from the perspectives of prosecution, defense, and the judge, and determination and imposition of punishment.
