Course Description
Special Topics: Contemporary Writing From Folk and Fairy Tales MTWR 10:30 am - 12:20 pm Students in this course will participate in generative writing exercises, read traditional and contemporary tales, create new work, and share it in workshops. This is a course for writing in multiple (and hybrid) genres and will explore themes of shadow, transformation, enchantment, archetype and more, as well as develop an understanding of the formal elements of folk and fairy tales. Using contemporary writing by authors such as Kate Bernheimer, Uchida Hyakken, Ben Okri, Joy Williams and Angela Carter as models, the class will focus on how folk and fairy tale traditions have transformed and what those transformations have to teach us today. Instructor: John Colburn
