Abstract

The research questions addressed in this project was, what are the best mathematical teaching practices for early elementary students to ensure they are prepared to transfer problem-solving skills to other areas of mathematics as well as other aspects of their lives? The author developed a series of two professional development sessions that focus on background knowledge and research in the area of mathematics, as well as effective teaching strategies that can be implemented into any primary mathematics classroom. It encompasses eight highly effective teaching practices influenced by the work of Huinker and Bill, to ensure students gain transferable conceptual math knowledge, problem- solving skills, and a growth mathematical mindset. This professional development offers engaging learning opportunities, discussion, and reflection for adult learners. The author concludes that: 1) there is a strong need for teachers to be informed about what research says in the way we teach our students in the area of mathematics; 2) students are struggling to develop strong problem-solving skills that transfer into their adult lives; 3) mathematical mindset plays a valuable role in mathematical achievement.
