Abstract
Many primary teachers often hear from parents that they want to help their child learn to read and write at home but do not have tools or resources to do so. Parents of young children are often left wondering how they can help their child be successful in the literacy classroom and create meaningful practice opportunities at home. This capstone project addresses the research question: How can primary elementary teachers support early literacy development by providing families with home-based literacy resources? A literature review revealed that family literacy resources should be focused on emergent literacy skills such as phonological awareness, concepts of print, phonemic awareness, and vocabulary. It also examined the characteristics of strong family literacy programs and the home literacy environment, such as providing training and explanations for activities, increased parental involvement, access to picture books, and prompts for vocabulary-building discussions about stories. In response, a website was designed that contains a variety of activities focused on emergent literacy skill development. The project was developed for teachers and daycare providers to share with families of children prior to entering kindergarten.
