Abstract
The guiding question addressed in this project is, What are some methods that Minnesota schools are using to create a safe learning environment for students and staff? The choice to pursue this topic was precipitated by the author's firsthand experience with the effects of gun violence in a Minnesota school. The subject of school violence is explored, including its causes, effects, and prevalence in U.S. schools. From the work of several researchers and organizations, a list of best practice methods for preventing and preparing for school violence is constructed. Through a collective case study, the methods of three Minnesota schools are evaluated and lend to a broader picture of what improvements should be made in preventing and preparing for violence in schools.
