Abstract
The research question addressed in this project was, what do students and teachers in rural schools perceive as effective and successful ways of meeting the needs of newcomer ELL students? The motivating factor for this capstone was the desire to more adequately meet the growing needs of a rural district ELL program experiencing an influx of new-to-country English Language Learners. The study documents statements from interviews with students and teachers which reveal their perceptions with regard to how schools can best assist newcomer students in their adjustment to a new language, academic atmosphere, and culture.
