Abstract

This Capstone identifies the problems that struggling readers face in middle school and ways teachers can work to help these students learn and enjoy reading. Research into the ways in which successful readers learn to read focuses the resource guide on decoding, fluency, and comprehension. The attached resource guide provides a framework for teaching the basic skills of reading to middle school struggling readers, including some unit plans and suggested lesson plans written to reflect the International Baccalaureate philosophy. The resource guide includes graphic organizers, suggested texts, and activities designed to support the needs of middle school struggling readers and grounded in the research based strategies that should help these struggling readers to find success in their reading classes and beyond. The goal of the resource guide is to provide teachers with the research based strategies they need to support students struggling to read in the middle grades.
