Abstract
The research question was, how can the incorporation of the visual arts into my curriculum impact early writing? Two motivating factors for this capstone were working in an immersion classroom and therefore the investigation of best teaching practices to assist students learning, and working in the era of No Child Left Behind, legislation the create new implications to art infused instruction. This capstone documents one teacher's creation of specific lessons that review drawing and picture books as a form of the visual arts in writing instruction. The author documents the lessons and uses related literature to construct meaning and validate the study. She describes both success and struggles in implementing the lessons and concludes that: 1) the visual arts are a valuable tool for teaching writing, and 2) a new study is required to explore if the visual arts were beneficial to all her students.
