Abstract
The research question addressed in this project was, which classroom lessons have the potential to teach Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS) in Spanish to native English speakers? It documents one elementary Spanish immersion teacher's revision of social and academic lessons to emphasize students' correct use of social language in their second language, Spanish. The lessons were selected because of the essentiality of the social language they utilize, and their broad accessibility to many Spanish immersion classroom teachers. The author discusses language immersion theory and uses related research literature to construct a curriculum that follows current understanding of best practice in immersion education. She also documents her teaching colleagues' reactions to the curriculum.
