Abstract
The research question addressed in this project was: What are the elements of a tenth grade language arts curriculum that uses authentic assessment as the final assessment for the unit? It documents one teacher's creation of a unit on war and its effects on humanity, using a final authentic assessment instead of more traditional written assessment options. This unit relies heavily upon research from Grant Wiggins and others who have studied the benefits of authentic assessment. Daily lesson plan structure used the Wiggins and McTighe model. The author documents authentic assessment--its definition, history, benefits and components--as well as the details of the curriculum unit. Lastly, the paper culminates in a reflection of the whole capstone process.
