Abstract
The research question addressed in this project was: What science knowledge and vocabulary can be delivered through best practices in order for English Learners to be successful in a science content class? The motivating factor for this capstone was witnessing and researching the struggle English Language Learners have in science class. This capstone details a science unit that an English Learner teacher can use to pre-teach science vocabulary and concepts to his or her students. The author uses documented strategies to help teach science using key aspects of Sheltered Instructional Observational Protocol and push-in teaching practices. Learning to incorporate science into a lesson that has both science content and language objectives was challenging, but was meaningful for student learning.
