Abstract
Gloria Ladson-Billings’ nine principles of culturally responsive pedagogy are referenced, integrated, and modeled in this curriculum project for a first-year college writing class. Examples of Ladson-Billings’ principles include communication of high expectations, active teaching methods, student-centered and culturally mediated instruction. The unit, Examining Difference, requires the use of Claudia Rankine’s Citizen: An American Lyric as the core text and serves as an invitation for students to investigate aspects of their identities in a multi-genre project. Goals for the unit are described as are related activities. A copy of The Citizen Project writing assignment and rubric is provided in the appendix.
