Abstract
The research question addressed in this capstone project was, how can a vocabulary-based science curriculum taught in the English literacy block best support fourth grade Spanish immersion students' learning? The motivation to pursue this topic stemmed from the unique need to bridge science content lessons being delivered in Spanish with the language arts instruction in English as well as the need to prepare students for future English instruction and assessment. This capstone draws upon current research in the areas of immersion education, best practices in vocabulary instruction, as well as content area literacy and includes authors such as Cameron, Graves, and Harvey & Goudvis. Based on this information and the author's classroom observations, a science vocabulary-based curriculum was created that can be used with fourth grade students during the English language arts block.
