Abstract
The research question addressed in this project is how can I modify instructional strategies to improve reading comprehension in the general education classroom? This work was motivated by the teacher's experiences in the classroom with students of varying levels of reading ability. The author's writing was influenced by reading research groups and authors such as The RAND Reading Study Group, The National Reading Panel, and Fountas & Pinnel. The author integrated guided reading groups in an effort to focus on small group instruction of several researched reading comprehension strategies. The author discovered that reading comprehension must be taught explicitly to students, and teachers must use a variety of purposeful assessments to measure student progress.
