Abstract

This capstone is a curriculum development project in designing a text set for students in intermediate grades. This capstone reflects the research surrounding reading motivation amongst fifth grade urban learners. Included in this capstone is a summary of the Urban Learner Framework, as well as motivation strategies to utilize in encouraging students to read. The different types of motivation, intrinsic and extrinsic, are discussed in detail in the literature review. This capstone also provides an overview of the definition of a text set in addition to providing a summary of the different types of alternative texts to use with learners in the classroom. Chapter four is a comprehensive text set teachers would be able to use when teaching the Underground Railroad and the Civil War to intermediate grade students. Included in the text set are classroom application ideas and lessons for teacher to immediately implement into their classrooms.
