Abstract
This capstone explores how to support the growth of empathy in the second grade classroom. Specific themes include the need for empathy in education, the theories and understandings of moral development, emotional intelligence, character education, and tools for teaching empathy. Included is a curriculum centered on the emotional intelligence components of self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, and social skills. The activities take place in the form of dialogue, literature, moral dilemmas, role-play, and experiential lessons. Teacher reflections and student work are presented. Additionally, several guides for teaching social values are discussed. These serve to address a particular need a student might face at any given time throughout the school year.
