Abstract
The research question addressed in this capstone is, how can teachers create a community of learners and enhance the special education inclusion model? The author seeks to discover strategies that elementary teachers can use to benefit disabled and nondisabled students and create a positive classroom community. Key influence for this capstone was the first student with special needs that the author had the pleasure of teaching. The author uses a qualitative research approach implementing strategies and observing students behaviors. Interviews and pre and post surveys are also used to better understand what creates a positive community. The author concluded that successful strategies in creating a positive inclusive classroom community are: 1) modeling acceptance, 2) sharing student success and improvement, 3) including students in all activities, and 4) providing many social interactions between disabled and nondisabled students.
