Abstract
The research question guiding this curriculum design project was: How can using the state standards and data from the MCA II tests specification for reading, as a language arts classroom teacher help to create focused and interactive mini lessons that would target specific student weaknesses in a small group setting, without teaching to the test, especially in a reading and writing workshop? The idea that guided this capstone was standardized testing and how it can affect not only a classroom, but also how a teacher presents their content. Looking at best practices and using the state standards to teach engaging curriculum without teaching to the test, the end result of this capstone is a poetry unit designed using the state standards, the MCA II test specifications for reading, to be implemented using mini lessons in a reading and writing workshop.
