Abstract
The research question addressed in this project was, how can an online book club be designed to promote discussions using books that teach peace, equity, and social justice. This curriculum design project incorporated research from three areas of learning: literature circles, online learning, and teaching peace, equity, and social justice through the lens of critical literacy. Using the research from Understanding By Design (Wiggins, McTighe, 2005), a book club unit was developed with the book Seedfolks, by Sid Fleichman. The goal was for students to explore the characters and setting in the book so they could see commonalities and differences with themselves and the text. The unit was written to be implemented in an online environment that was created on a Moodle website. The online book club included activities such as discussion forums, chats, assignments, and personal reflection questions.
