Abstract
The research question addressed in this project was what effective strategies can I use as a preschool educator to increase my students' understanding of phonemic awareness? The motivating factor behind the creation of this project is because in 2009 almost 50% of Minnesota preschool students were entering Kindergarten either in the process of developing language and literacy skills or have yet to develop these skills. This project talks about the importance of creating a successful early literacy program which includes phonemic awareness and what phonemic awareness instruction should consist. The author believes that phonemic awareness instruction should be taught in a continuum. This capstone goes on to provides a collection of research based activities and assessment tools that would lead to students' gaining a better understanding of phonemic awareness. The author also discusses the limitations and the revelations regarding the creation of a phonemic awareness based curriculum.
