Abstract
The research question addressed is: What is the developmentally appropriate type of homework for junior high school students? The motivating factor for this capstone was the constant and ever changing debate around homework. This capstone discusses the research regarding the positives and negatives around homework, including the history of homework, how much is assigned, how it is graded, the purpose of the homework, and the brain research around the developmental capabilities of students at the junior high level. The author uses information gathered from research along with a short school-wide survey and interviews with three teachers to determine if teachers are creating and assigning developmentally appropriate homework. The results show that teachers with several years of teaching experience and a continued path of personal development and learning are the most aware of developmentally appropriate homework. This learning leads to a true passion for teaching adolescents and understanding the purpose of homework in creating a successful learning experience for students at all ability levels.
