Abstract

This capstone explores a systematic way to embed state standards into a service-learning curriculum. While respecting the core ideals of service-learning a unit plan is laid out making sure the main goal is covering state standards. This capstone shows how Understanding by Design can be paired with service-learning to teach high academic and social skills to elementary students. The curriculum focuses on teaching a group of urban students about the achievement gap, while making sure to teach core state math standards.
