Abstract
This Capstone project explored ideas and theories about creativity, different approaches to writing instruction and assessment, and the personal narrative genre. These ideas and theories were then used to build and create an 8th grade Language Arts curriculum unit on personal narrative writing. The major observation of this Capstone is that the personal narrative genre is the property of all students because all students should be given the opportunity to explore who they have been, who they are now, and who they might be in the future. Every single person in every single classroom needs to know that their life matters and that their voice counts. Students must be shown the range of ways they can present themselves in writing so that they can choose how they tell the stories of their individual lives. Empowerment is at the core of this curriculum unit. Again, every life matters. Every voice counts.
