Abstract
The research question addressed in this project is, in what ways might the under appreciation of black culture impact the achievement of black students and what research supported instructional strategies might cause positive achievement gains for black elementary students in literacy? The author developed a six-day literacy plan that incorporates research from Wiggins and McTighe's (2005) Understanding By Design lesson format and David Hyerle's (2005) Thinking Maps. The author implements related research that promotes achievement for black students, including culturally relevant lessons to engage learners.
