Abstract
The research question addressed was: How does a strong student/teacher relationship promote mutual respect and engage RtI (Response to Intervention) students in my seventh grade math classroom? The motivating factor for this capstone was the struggle to keep my RtI students motivated and engaged in daily class. This research describes techniques to incorporate within a classroom that increase academic motivation and engagement along with mutual respect between teacher and student. This capstone explains the results of surveys and interviews that encompass the thoughts and feelings of students within the classroom. The results agreed with Goodenow (1993) who stated that students show more effort and greater achievement when they perceive that their teachers are interested and supportive. The students want to make their teachers proud of them, and ultimately they want to be proud of themselves.
