Abstract
The research question addressed in this capstone was: How can formative assessment be used to better understand achievement levels and inform instruction for low performing first grade math students? This capstone details summative and formative assessment strategies used with first grade low performing math students. The author of this capstone researched best practices in math assessments supported by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. The author integrated assessment strategies into the mathematics curriculum to determine which ones gave the best information about the understanding of math concepts from the low performing math students in her classroom.
