Abstract
The research question addressed in this project is, how will implementing critical literacy strategies into an eighth grade remedial reading program impact student learning and engagement? It shows how the author implemented critical literacy by using a strategy by Maureen McLaughlin and Glenn L. DeVoogd called Problem Posing from their book, Critical Literacy: Enhancing Student's Comprehension of Text. The author developed a unit on the book Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman, which she used with her eighth grade remedial reading students. She documents her journey with the unit and the findings she found through data collection clearly demonstrating increased student engagement with the implementation of Problem Posing as well as the students' knowledge of critical literacy.
