Abstract
The research question addressed in this project is, How can the use of formative assessment with third grade students guide my instruction and impact their reading comprehension? The motivating factor for this capstone was the desire to determine how to use formative assessment with third graders in reading comprehension. This capstone details the definition of formative assessment and verifies Black & Wiliam and Fisher & Frey's influential research verifying the positive impact formative assessment has on academic achievement. The author documents techniques for effectively collecting evidence to reveal success and struggles in reading comprehension. Guiding students' learning by giving feedback and adjusting instruction are also described.
