Abstract
The research question addressed in this capstone project is, with the intention of fostering intrinsic motivation, how can poetry be used to create successes in a fifth grade classroom? The author discovers why creativity is a key to motivating students. This capstone outlines how to use the creative tool of poetry to move students from relying on external motivators to their own internal motivation. The author outlines how teachers can successfully implement a poetry unit within their classroom to create immediate successes for all students. Throughout the project the author saw immediate results in students' attitudes and work habits.
