Abstract
In effort to improve students' writing skills and science comprehension, the study incorporated science notebooks into a physical science classroom with a high number of special education students. Students used science notebooks to write laboratory investigation's purposes, procedures, and conclusions. The researcher required students to write complete sentences for all observations or questions asked in order to help them become better writers. Although the science notebooks did not help every student in this mixed ability class, they did help special education students writing skills improve which may lead to increased scores on the state mandated writing test need for graduation. However, with the use of science notebooks, the study determined that all students did improve their laboratory investigation scores during the two-month study in a suburban high school in Minnesota.
