Abstract
The research question addressed in this project was, what is an effective way to address the needs of teachers in the area of reading comprehension during an Elementary Professional Development course? Motivation for this capstone was the author's belief that effective professional development places teachers in charge of their own learning. This capstone details a framework for a teacher-led elementary professional development course or book study conducted with Stephanie Harvey and Anne Goudvis's book Strategies the work: Teaching comprehension for understanding and engagement 2nd edition (2007). Details of each book study session are included as well as related research literature in the areas of professional learning communities or learning circles, quality instruction for students, teacher reflection and teacher leadership in professional development.
