Abstract
The research question addressed in this project was, in what ways will training students in partner reading strategies impact their fluency rates and sight word recognition? Strategies implemented throughout the study focus on strengthening the basic skills lacking in struggling readers which are preventing them from being successful readers. The research presented focuses on three main components: how to incorporate partner reading strategies and why these methods are effective, the importance of fluency development, and why high-frequency sight word recognition is a vital skill in learning to read. The author details data collection methods and results and provides mini-lessons for teaching fluency and sight word through partnering readers of similar ability levels. Results of this study solidify the fact that repeated practice through partner routines can, in fact, increase both fluency and sight word recognition.
