Abstract
The research question addressed in this project was what research supported teaching and learning strategies will nurture the Habits of Mind (HoM) that are critical for successful transition to employment for moderate to severe developmentally and cognitively disabled students assigned to a senior high school functional skills work based experience? This research was motivated by the desire to successfully prepare this group of students for their transition to employment. It documents an Occupational Therapist's investigation into learning that Cognitive Behavior Modification is an effective primary strategy to nurture HoM when paired with other supportive sub strategies. These HoM identified by Costa (2000), are habits all people need to be successful in all areas of life. This information was then utilized to develop a curriculum for nurturing four HoM demonstrating persistence, thinking flexibly, managing impulsivity, and working for accuracy and precision, identified by the author as important for successful employment.
