Abstract
This study explores approaches to teaching first graders how to spell. The research reviewed first looks at traditional approaches: systematic spelling instruction using a basal reader, systematic based spelling instruction using developmental levels and a structured approach through language. It continues by looking at new programs using making words, word sorts and word boxes. Spelling methods are meshed with constructivism, differentiation and Understanding by Design. This study concludes with the combination of spelling methods and teaching methods in the development of spelling lessons.
