Abstract
This capstone addresses the question how does one create portfolio entries in a 9th grade geometry unit on perimeter, area, and volume? The desire to engage 9th grade students in their learning led to the creation of the portfolio curriculum. Key influences on for this project include peers, students, and authors such as Wormli, Wiggens & McTighe, and publications from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Using the Understanding by Design method, a curriculum was developed to incorporate alternative assessments into a portfolio setting. The resulting product includes journals, problems, goal-setting, and reflection questions to engage students in their learning.
