Abstract
The central focus of this capstone was the design and creation of a supplemental rhythm text that could be used in conjunction with a beginning band student's primary method book. It was my feeling that the primary method book was not doing an adequate job of presenting the concept of rhythm to the students. Also, I needed a text that could be used quickly and consistently in small group lessons. My research centered around the purpose and positive qualities of effective assignments as well as appropriate strategies for teaching rhythm to beginning students. The end result was the creation of the rhythm workbook. It contains a variety of strategies for teaching rhythm to the beginning band student. It also has built-in technology-assisted assessment features to gauge student learning in the area of rhythm.
