Abstract
This capstone addresses the question: how does incorporating a social justice curriculum in a language arts classroom affect upper elementary students' attitudes toward social justice issues? The research connects one teacher's early experiences with issues of social injustice with her desire to spark in her students an attitude of striving for social justice. Two key researchers influenced the author Heather Hackman discusses essential components for social justice education and Linda Christensen uses language arts to lead her students to action. The action research project uses the aMaze curriculum and classroom writing and discussion to assist in answering the question.
