Abstract
This capstone develops active-participation curriculum for the Music and Related Arts (General Music) class. The student demographic in the school in which I teach has changed greatly in the past five years, reflecting an increased population in lower socio-economic circumstances, as well as increases in English Language Learner and At-risk student groups. In conjunction with the current curriculum, I have added four active-participation activities. These curricular changes focus on students being able to gain hands-on experience through the teaching of the four units: Socratic Seminars, Building an Imitation Baroque Instrument, and Interactive Activities, and a World Drumming Unit. The goals are to build a community of learners, reduce behavioral concerns, and improve academic achievement. It is a beginning to engaging students in their educational endeavors.
