Abstract
The question addressed is, what is an engaging curriculum that cultivates critical thinking in intermediate students on the elements and principles of art? Throughout her experiences as an art student and a teacher of art, the author found curriculum based on the elements and principles of art lifeless. The author reviews literature on the theories of art education including creative problem-solving, discipline-based art education, and visual culture. She examines research on critical thinking, the elements and principles of art, and characteristics of an art curriculum. The author points out the need for more research in the area of art. Using the curriculum of Backwards Design, the author creates a curriculum that incorporates aspects of theories of art education and methods of cultivating critical thinking. Key influences included past art teachers and professors, advisors, and authors such as Eisner, Perkins, Wiggins, and TcTighe.
