Abstract
The research questions addressed in this capstone are: 1) How does child development affect learning in science? 2) What are the best strategies for teaching science in the primary grades? 3) How do science notebooks enhance science learning and affect literacy learning in the elementary grades? The methodology to answer the questions was qualitative and quantitative data used to measure the progress students made in science learning, the affects science notebooks had on reading and writing skills, as well objective observations made by the researcher. Literature both supporting and refuting the questions are presented along with a narrative description of the research procedure and data collected during the study. Conclusions from the study include an increase in science content learning and reading and expository writing skills, and anecdotal evidence of an increased interest in science and writing from primary students.
